Photos of a same-sex couple at Ghana’s Independence Arch and other national landmarks have stirred heated reactions online.
Many Ghanaians have criticized the images as disrespectful to a site that symbolizes national pride and freedom, especially in a country where same-sex relations remain widely opposed.
The photos are part of the #ShowGhanaLove campaign, led by South African couple Lue and Rue, who described their action as a protest against Ghana’s anti-LGBTQ bill.
Kofi Okyere Darko, Director of Diaspora Affairs at the Presidency, briefly shared the images in a now-deleted post, writing: “Who are they? Do your thing but not beneath our independence monument.” The incident has since sparked nationwide debate over LGBTQ+ rights, protest, and respect for national symbols.
