Why Has the U.S Banned Ghanaians From Travelling?
According to US immigration authorities, the decision to suspend visa issuance for Ghanaian travellers was trigered by Ghana’s alleged failure to cooperate in accepting deported nationals from the United States.
The policy shift falls under the Section 243(d) of the imigration and nationality act, which allows the US to apply visa sanctions on countries that refuse to take back their deported citizens.
Who is Affected by the Travel Ban?
US Travel ban on Ghanaian nationals will affects;
1. All new visa applicants from Ghana, including B1/B2 tourist and business visas.
2. Students, skilled workers and visiting family members.
3. Ghanaians already in the US are not affected by this new visa pplicy but may face scrutiny during visa renewal.
Addtionally those who are intended to visit the U.S may found themselves wanting as “No new U.S visas will be processed for Ghanaian citizens until firther notice”.
Travel plans for business, tourism and education may need to be postponed or canceled.
This follows after an official confirmation from Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa on Thursday June, 26.
The news has sparked outrage on social media, with many Ghanaians questioning why such a decision was made without prior notice.
Ghanaian influencers and diaspora groups are calling on both governments to find an urgent resolution.
Meanwhile, despite the policy having already taken effect, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs may be in talks with US authorities to settle the diplomatic deadlock.
