Football World Bids Tearful Farewell to Diogo Jota and Brother

The football world came together in sorrow on Saturday as hundreds gathered to bid an emotional farewell to Portuguese international Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Silva, following their tragic deaths in a car accident in Spain on Thursday.

The funeral service, held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar near Porto, drew a host of family members, friends, teammates, and football dignitaries. Jota, 28, and André, 25, both professional footballers, were remembered not only for their achievements on the pitch but for the profound impact they had on those around them.

Jota’s wife, Rute Cardoso — whom he married less than two weeks before the fatal crash and with whom he shares three young children — was seen embracing mourners at the church, her grief shared by a stunned nation. The service lasted about an hour.

Liverpool players led tributes from the English Premier League club. Captain Virgil van Dijk and left back Andy Robertson solemnly carried floral tributes shaped like the brothers’ jerseys, flanked by teammates Alexis Mac Allister, Darwin Núñez, and Ibrahima Konaté. Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, and CEO Michael Edwards were also in attendance.

As the brothers’ coffins were carried into the church, bells tolled and a long line of mourners followed in silence. A black-and-white portrait of André Silva with the inscription “Para Sempre Um De Nós” – “Forever One Of Us” – was carried ahead of them, adding to the poignancy of the scene.

Portugal international Rúben Neves, who played alongside Jota for both the national team and Wolves, served as one of the pallbearers. Other members of Portugal’s football family — including national coach Roberto Martínez, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, Manchester City’s Rúben Dias and Bernardo Silva, and Chelsea’s João Félix — all joined the gathering in Gondomar to pay their final respects.

“Today was a day that we showed that we are a very, very large but close family,” said Martínez outside the church. “We are Portugal … we are together and we will always be together.”

The bishop of Porto, Dom Manuel Linda, delivered a heartfelt homily directed at the brothers’ parents and Jota’s young family. “Solidarity in love is always stronger than death,” he said, his words echoing through a congregation heavy with emotion.

On Friday, a public wake was held at the same church, allowing the local community to pay their respects. Tributes also poured in from across the globe. During the FIFA Club World Cup matches, moments of silence were observed. Al-Hilal’s Neves and João Cancelo, as well as Chelsea winger Pedro Neto, all visibly moved, stood in remembrance of their late compatriot and friend.

The tragic passing of Jota and his brother has left a profound void, not just in Portuguese football, but in the hearts of countless fans and colleagues worldwide. As the two were laid to rest, Gondomar stood still — mourning not just two footballers, but two sons, brothers, and friends gone far too soon.
