Transfer gossip: Ronaldo frustration and Chelsea set to sign defender
Welcome to Tuesday’s round-up of all of the latest news and speculation from across the transfer sphere.
Domestic deals
Despite his apparent eagerness to move on, Cristiano Ronaldo is now ‘increasingly likely’ to remain at Manchester United next season according to a report in the Telegraph which states that the club remain steadfast in their ‘not for sale’ stance.
The Daily Mail report that after talks ‘accelerated’ on Monday, Chelsea are now big favourites to get a deal for a defender by agreeing to meet Brighton’s £50m asking price for Marc Cucurella.
Both the Telegraph and Sky Sports report that Newcastle have submitted a second offer for Leicester’s James Maddison in the region of £45m (although payments are staggered), with the player’s camp having suggested that he is keen on the move north, although it is stated that the Foxes are likely to reject it.
That same outlet have also rubbished reports that Everton are interested in signing Michy Batshuayi as a potential replacement for Richarlison.
West Ham are set for frustration in their attempts to sign Filip Kostić, who isn’t keen on a move to the Londoners despite Eintracht Frankfurt agreeing to a deal between the clubs, according to the Guardian.
A report in Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus’ native Ghana claims that Tottenham are considering a move before the transfer window closes, having tracked the 22-year-old for some time.
On the continent
Frenkie de Jong is still against a move to Manchester United, say Sport, with Chelsea or Bayern Munich the only options he would consider a Barcelona exit for.
But one midfielder who is close to a Camp Nou exit is Riqui Puig, who is nearing a switch to LA Galaxy.
La Gazzetta dello Sport offer an update on Juventus’ pursuit of a new striker with the surprise update that they have turned their attention to free agent Dries Mertens after he departed Napoli following a failure to come to an agreement on a new deal.
However, Juve are also interested in Luis Muriel and are also considering versatile Eintracht Frankfurt winger Kostić, while the Serie A giants have accepted that any deals for Timo Werner or Memphis Depay are much more unlikely.
Villarreal are set to submit another loan offer for Giovani Lo Celso which will include an option to make the move permanent for a fee of €15m, per MARCA.
Sky in Germany report that Thilo Kehrer has been placed up for sale at PSG, although the only interested party at the moment are Sevilla.
Chelsea are willing to cover three quarters of Kepa’s salary, say Sky Sport Italia, in order to send him to Napoli on loan for the season.
Exciting Belgian talent Charles De Ketelaere is on the brink of a move to Serie A champions Milan, having arrived in the city to put the final stages to a deal.
From the horse’s mouth
Christian Eriksen has dispelled the notion that a romantic return to Tottenham was ever on the cards this summer and that Manchester United always took priority after their interest became clear.
“They never really came with anything so it wasn’t really a thing for me to go back to Tottenham at the time and United were in very early on, very positive and I had good conversations with them,” he told the Manchester Evening News.
“It was very positive from the first few phone calls already and the club felt like they wanted me so it was on for a long time.”
