Shatta Wale boldly ‘trashes’ Stonebwoy’s BET award; says he should be awarded at IRAWMA (video)
The ‘realest’ dancehall star revealed that he had clinched the International Reggae & World Music Awards (IRAWMA) three times but his accomplishment was not highlighted by the media. According to him, IRAWMA is more relevant to the reggae music industry compared to BET Awards which was claimed by Stonebwoy in 2015.
In an interview on United Showbiz with Nana Ama McBrown on UTV, Shatta Wale, posited that Stonebwoy should be awarded at IRAWMA and not at BET. Stonebwoy, however, beat Shatta Wale to win the 2020 Best African Dancehall entertainer at the 38th International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA).
Shatta Wale emaphasised that the BET Awards is for musicians who have mastered the R&B, rap and hip-hop music genres.
The Taking Over and Mellissa hit maker was of the view that while both awards schemes are relevant to the music industry, each scheme is critical to a genre.
He indicated that the Ghana music industry is overly focusing on BET and blamed the lack of education on why people do not promote other awards such as IRAWMA.
”I’m going to say this and I know may be Stonebwoy is not going to like this. Stonebwoy should be awarded at IRAWMA and not BET. Because BET is for R&B, hip-hop rappers. So if Sarkodie goes to BET, it’s perfect for me,”Wale said. He stressed that his awards are ‘cherished’ in Jamaica where IRAWMA is also acknowledged compared to BET.
