Manchester United announce first signing of the summer
Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Tyrell Malacia on a four-year contract, with the option of an additional year. The 22-year-old becomes Erik ten Hag’s first signing in charge of the club.
Malacia looked on course to join Olympique Lyon last month but United hijacked the deal at the 11th hour, with the left-back option to switch De Kuip for Old Trafford.
Speaking after putting pen to paper on his United contract, Malacia said: “It’s an incredible feeling to have joined Manchester United. This is a new chapter for me, a new league with new team-mates and a tremendous manager [Erik ten Hag] leading us.
“I know from playing against his teams in the Eredivisie, the qualities that he has and what he demands of his players.
“Whilst I know that I am still young and will continue to develop, I can promise the United fans that I will leave everything on the pitch every time I pull on the red shirt. I’ll always be thankful to Feyenoord for all they have given to me and my family.
“None of this would be possible if it wasn’t for them. Now I’m ready to focus on the future with United, and help my new club achieve success.”
SN’s verdict… It’s been a long time coming but to finally get the first deal of the summer over the line is positive and as mentioned above, there is now hope that several players will follow Malacia through the door.
Malacia will add able competition at left-back and will battle it out with Luke Shaw, who remains the first choice and is likely to start the first game of the season.
Ten Hag knows Malacia well from his time in the Eredivisie and United’s transfer targets have followed that pattern this summer, with mostly players familiar to Ten Hag seriously pursued.
