Death Toll from El-Wak Stampede Remains Six; Disregard Any Other Reports — Ghana Armed Forces

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that the death toll from Wednesday morning’s stampede during its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra remains six, dismissing circulating reports suggesting a higher number.

In an update posted on its official social media pages, the Armed Forces urged the public to disregard any claims indicating that 12 people had died, emphasizing that such reports are false.

“Reference the unfortunate incident that occurred at El-Wak Sports Stadium this morning, 12 Nov 25, concerning the recruitment exercise, the death toll remains six. The public should treat any other reportage as false. The Ghana Armed Forces will keep updating the general public of any developments,” the statement read.

The clarification comes after some unverified reports on social media alleged that the number of fatalities had risen to 12 following the tragic incident.

Earlier, the Ghana Armed Forces issued a statement expressing regret over the incident, which occurred around 6:20 a.m., when an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and forced their way through the gates before the scheduled screening began.

That statement confirmed that six potential recruits had died, while several others sustained injuries and were receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured,” it added.

Meanwhile, GAF says investigations into the incident are ongoing and has assured the public that credible updates will be communicated in due course.
